The body was seen by his colleagues through the window of the hall around 9 am on Saturday, said Metropolitan Police Spokesperson and Senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khaer Alam.

The victim, Sabbir Ahmed Sarfaraj was the assistant commissioner of the city’s Rajpara Police Station Zone and lived in the Bhadra Padma residential area.

“The body was seen sitting motionless on a sofa in Sabbir’s office,” said police official Ifte Khaer. “A thin nylon cord was tied around his throat. The other end was tied to the window grill.”

“His door was locked. His colleagues saw him through the window and reported to the mess authorities. Initial investigation suggests Sabbir committed suicide.”

The police official was unable to confirm if such a case of suicide has been reported before.

Sabbir’s father, retired Police Commissioner Obaidullah, resides in Dhaka.

Rajshahi Medical College Forensic Division Assistant Chief Enamul Huq and top metropolitan police officials are currently investigating the case.
