The murder occurred in Shibrampur’s Mujahid Club area around 7:30 am on Thursday, said Sadar Police Station Inspector Mahmud Hassan.

The victim has been identified as Farooq Hossain, 35, who was the proprietor of a local bakery.

Farooq was involved in a dispute with locals for several days, the inspector said.

“He was set upon by a group of attackers close to the club. Locals then took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead.”

“I was out for a walk when I saw three or four men attacking Farooq with sharp weapons,” said eyewitness Aminul Islam Tipu. “I tried to stop them and they fled. Some of us tried to take him to the hospital. He died on the way.

“Rabbi, Ripon and Shumon from the Shibrampur area are responsible for the murders,” claimed Farooq’s brother Shafiul Karim. “We want justice.”

The incident has led to unrest in the area and additional police personnel have been deployed.

“We are currently looking trying to identify those involved and arrest them, said district Superintendent of Police Jihadul Kabir.

Farooq, who had worked at a private organisation in Pabna for many years, left his job a few years ago to open a bakery. He would sell the products  from his bakery to other local stores.
