The team of explosive experts has left Dhaka for Sylhet in order to conduct further tests on the device, said RAB – 9 Deputy Captain Maj Jamshedur Rahman.

The object, wrapped in tape, was found under a staircase at the Scholars Home School and College around 11:30 am on Tuesday, said Sylhet Airport Police Station OC Mosharraf Hossain.

The school’s students were evacuated after the bomb was discovered.

Police and RAB were called in and have been conducting tests on the device.

On Tuesday afternoon RAB official Maj Jamshedur Rahman said efforts to defuse the explosive would begin once the trained RAB bomb disposal unit arrived in Sylhet, but this could take until the evening or even the next day.

“An initial investigation by a RAB bomb disposal unit found the circuit is active and is connected by cables,” he said.

Security forces are trying to confirm how the bomb ended up in the school premises, he added.

At the request of the guardians, the students were taken out of school early and allowed to go home around 12:40 pm, said Principal Brig Gen Zubair Siddiquey.

The six-storey school building is outfitted with CCTV cameras. According to the principal, students are also searched before they can enter the school.

Law enforcers are reviewing CCTV footage to find how the bomb could have entered the building.
