Death penalties reduced to life term is imprisonment until death: AG

Only death row convicts whose sentences are reduced to life imprisonment will be jailed until death, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said.

So people who are given the life sentence in cases will not be jailed for the rest of their lives, he said after analysing an appellate verdict on Tuesday.

Their sentence will be for 30 years as specified in the Bangladesh Penal Code, said Alam.

The Supreme Court on Feb 14 gave a verdict reducing the sentences for two murder convicts from death to life imprisonment. It said life imprisonment for them meant imprisonment until death.

The court published the Appellate Division verdict on its website on Monday.

The definition of life imprisonment will stand at imprisonment until death when Section 53 and Section 45 of the Penal Code are read together, it said.
