Two get life terms for raping schoolgirl in Pirojpur

A Pirojpur court has sentenced two persons to life in jail in a 2013 case over the rape of a schoolgirl.

The convicts are 19-year-old Toslim Hasan Bappi and 18-year-old Imran Mohajon.

Bappi’s father Shohidul Islam Mohajon, 45, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Zillur Rahman announced the verdict on Sunday.

Bappi, aided by Imran, raped a schoolgirl in his neighbourhood in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila in January 2013, according to case details.

The victim got pregnant and Bappi’s father took her to Dhaka promising a marriage with his son. The girl was instead subjected to a forced abortion in a clinic before she was driven away.

The victim’s father started the case in June, said Defence Counsel Alauddin. The police pressed charges in July, setting off the trial of the accused.

The court has also slapped a Tk 100,000 fine on Bappi and Imran. They will have to serve one more year in prison if they fail to pay the fine.

Shahidul was fined Tk 50,000, in default of which he will have to serve six more months in jail.
