Man burns himself in attempted suicide during altercation with 'girlfriend'  

A young man has attempted to commit suicide by setting fire to himself reportedly during an altercation with his girlfriend in the capital's Sobhanbagh.

Sumon Kumar Paul, 26, poured kerosene on his body and burnt himself in front of the girl Saturday evening, police said.

He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, DMCH police camp SI Bachchu Mia told bdnews24.com, quoting doctors.

The doctors said Sumon suffered 35 percent of his body, including his trachea, was burnt, according to Bachchu.

Sumon was seeking for a job after graduating from Daffodil International University.

Quoting his friend Kamrul Islam, the police official said Sumon, who hails from Jessore, called the girl beside Dental College Hostel in the area to speak about their relation which worsened recently.

"Sumon set fire to himself at one stage of an altercation," Bachchu said.

Another friend of Sumon said he was also disgruntled by failure to get a job.
