Restaurant worker gets life term for murder of Korean woman

A court in Dhaka has ordered life imprisonment for a restaurant worker for the murder of his Korean employer’s wife.

The court of Dhaka Speedy Trial Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar announced the verdict on Thursday, six years after the murder.

The convict, Manik Sarkar, has also been ordered to pay a fine of Tk 10,000.

The 32-year old broke down in tears as the verdict was read out .

According to the case file, Manik had worked as a cleaner at the Arirang restaurant in Dhaka.

Angered over problems with his wages, Manik attacked the 69-year old woman with a knife on Nov 9, 2011, stabbing her in the neck and shoulder areas. He fled when a witness to the attack raised an alarm.

The victim was initially taken to Dhaka’s Apollo Hospital and then transferred to a hospital in South Korea, where she died on Nov 17 of that year.

Her husband filed a case over the incident at the Gulshan police station on Nov 9. Police submitted the chargesheet on Apr 30, 2012.

Manik was arrested and submitted a deposition to the magistrate under section 164 of the Constitution. The court rendered its verdict on Thursday after hearing to the testimony of 15 persons.
