The vandalism case was filed by Manager Shafiqul Islam Swapan and the case for attacking police was filed by SI Mahiuddin Roton at the Kotowali Police Station late on Wednesday.

Fifty-nine persons were named and between 400 and 500 unnamed individuals were accused in the two cases, said Kotowali Police Station SI Rokeya Parvin.

Metropolitan BCL President Imran Ahmed Imu and General Secretary Nurul Azim Rony were accused in both cases, said Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (South) Shah Md Abdur Rauf.

A 70,380 square foot swimming pool costing Tk 114 million is being near Chittagong’s MA Aziz Stadium under the supervision of the Chittagong sports body CJKS.  City mayor AZM Nasir Uddin is also the general secretary of CJKS.

Earlier, on Apr 10, at a rally at the Laldighi Maidan, Awami League leader Mohiuddin Chowdhury gave a 15-day ultimatum to stop construction work on the swimming pool. But, the sports council started the construction of the pool about a week ago.

The local BCL president and general secretary, known to be the followers of Mohiuddin Chowdhury, handed a memo to the deputy commissioner with a 48-hour ultimatum to remove the construction materials from the site.

They gathered at the Kazir Dewari square on Tuesday to press their demand.

The protests eventually led to clashes between BCL activists and police, leading to the injuries of 30, including 14 police personnel.
