“Capital dredging for rivers are a must to save the haor areas from inundation . . . Besides the construction of sustainable submerged embankment is necessary,” he told a meeting of local leaders in Sunamganj on Monday, a day after he visited the flooded areas.

The president also expressed his solidarity with those affected and pledged the government’s help.

“Being an inhabitant of haor and also the son of a farmer, I am very anxious about the situation and we need a permanent solution,” President Hamid said.

“I have already talked to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who already assured me of providing necessary assistances in this regard.”

Assistance will be provided to the affected farmers until the next Boro season, he added.

The president asked for patience from flood victims until the necessary government action could be taken and urged local leaders to work together to overcome the situation.
