The ruling party announced the cancellation in a statement on Sunday, a day before the prime minister is scheduled to return home after a four-day visit.

The statement said the party decided to cancel the reception as party chief Hasina ordered them to do so.

The party chief might have considered commuters' woes during such programmes.

The sufferings of the commuters in Dhaka, which is often called the city of traffic congestions, reach the peak when any large political party holds any programme.

The people suffered earlier during such 'mass reception' of the prime minister on her return from abroad.

During one of such programmes in September last year when the prime minister returned from the UN General Assembly, Dhaka experienced massive traffic congestions even though it was organised at the weekend.

Hasina went to New Delhi on a four-day state visit on Friday. She signed as many as 22 deals which include defence, civil nuclear cooperation, cyber security, and business and investment. India has also approved credit line of $5 billion.

The Awami League leaders said her supporters would line up on the street from the airport to the Ganabhaban in the 'mass reception'.
