According to DU authorities, the deceased ‘Bayezid’ hailed from Thakurgaon.

He was an honours first-year student of Applied Statistics at the University, said DU Proctor Prof Amzad Ali.

“Bayezid was returning to his dorm after playing footballs with his friends in the evening. Before entering the hall, he got down into the pond and drowned after reaching the middle of the pond,” he said.

Fire Service personnel rescued him, but he was declared dead after being taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Proctor Ali.

A schoolboy, Mohammad Ali, drowned while bathing in the pond, known as Shahidullah Hall pond, on Aug 13 last year.

On May 13, 2015, an undergrad student of Physics at Dhaka University drowned in the pond.

And a body of an unidentified man was also recovered from the pond on Feb 7, 2016.

Following the incidents, a signboard was placed beside the pond by the authorities prohibiting people from getting down there.
