The incident occurred on the Kushtia-Meherpur road near the Moshan Kaligarha Bridge in Mirpur Upazila around midnight on Wednesday, said District Detective Police OC Sabbirul Islam.

The deceased, Rafiqul Islam, hails from Machparha village in Rashbarhi.

A detective police team was sent to the scene after hearing reports that a gang was attempting to rob vehicles by blocking the road with a tree, said OC Islam.

“The robbers opened fire when they became aware of the police presence. Police returned fire and the shootout lasted almost 30 minutes. Most of the robbers fled, but Rafiq was found shot. He was taken to the Mirpur Upazila Medical Complex, where doctors declared him dead.”

Three police officers were injured in the shootout and received first aid, said OC Islam.

Rafiq had more than one case filed against him at the Kushtia and Rajbarhi police stations on charges of robbery and theft.

Police recovered a light gun, a bullet round and two sharp weapons from the scene, the OC said.
