The four were arrested on Tuesday in various areas in Chittagong and Bhola, said Bayejid Bostami Police Station OC Mohammad Mohsin.

Those detained have been identified as Md Iqbal Hossain, 27, his wife Yasmin Akhtar Rumpa, 21, Md Tayyub, and Md Helal.

Police detained Iqbal and Rumpa from Rawjan Upazila and Tayyub and Helal from Bhola’s Lalmohon Upazila on the basis of tip-offs, the OC said.

More information would be available at a press conference on Wednesday, he said.

The body was found in the third floor toilet of a four-storey building in West Shahid Nagar on Mar 22.

“The hands and feet of the body were tied with rope. Initial investigation indicated a rope was used to choke him to death,” Bayejid Bostami Police Station OC Md Mohsin had said,

The next day relatives identified the body of Md Alauddin, 23, a post-graduate student of Chittagong University’s Bangla department.

Police had said they were looking for four individuals in connection with the death based on information from the landlord who had showed the flat.

According to the landlord, three men and a young woman had come to the house and asked to look at a flat on the third floor, claiming they were interested in renting it.

“They said the flat was to their liking and the pregnant wife of one of the men told the landlord they wished to move in immediately. The woman and two of the men then left, saying they would return with the furniture. They told the landlord one of them would remain behind to clean the flat.”

The body was found that night by the landlord’s wife.

“The landlord’s wife found the door open and, not hearing any signs of life, entered the flat. She then found the body in the toilet and called police,” the OC said.
