Man killed in stampede in Hindu festival at Gopalganj

An elderly man has died in a stampede during a Hindu festival at Gopalganj’s Kashiani Upazila.

Fatik Chandra Modhu, 75, was walking to the site of the Baruni Bathing Festival at Thakurbarhi’s Orkandi to mark the birth anniversary of Sri Sri Harichad Thakur on Sunday.

He was pushed to the ground by a crowd of devotees at a bridge to Thakurbarhi, said Kashiani police OC AKM Alinoor Hossain.    

“The elderly man died on spot from being crushed under the stampede.”

But his relatives took away his dead body before the police reached the location, he said.
