The US President also greeted the people of Bangladesh in two separate messages sent to the President and the Prime Minister ahead of March 26, the US embassy in Dhaka said.

“I am pleased to congratulate you and the people of Bangladesh as you commemorate Bangladesh's Independence Day on March 26.  I am also honored to convey the best wishes of the people of the United States,” he wrote in his message to President Hamid.

He highlighted US’s “friendship” and “partnership” with Bangladesh in separate messages and said that has grown “stronger and deeper over the past four decades”.

“Our countries are important partners on democracy, development, trade, investment, and global and regional security, including counterterrorism,” he wrote in both messages.

He said he looked forward “to advancing our relationship to ensure continuing peace and prosperity for both of our countries.”

To the prime minister, he said the US and Bangladesh “share common values, as well as a commitment to ensure a safer, more peaceful world.  I look forward to continued peace and prosperity for both of our countries”.

“I join you in celebrating your country's great heritage,” he added.

President Trump assumed office on Jan 20 as the 45th US President.

The US was against Bangladesh independence in 1971 but recognised the country soon after its birth.
