Around 4:30am on Thursday, the fire broke out at the workshop located at Shapla Chattar in the city, said the Rangpur fire service.
Seven fire-fighting units managed to put out the flames after three hours of effort, station officer Shahidul Islam said.
“The fire soon spread through the oil stored inside the workshop. An electric short circuit could have triggered the fire,” he told bdnews24.com.
The damaged transformers could not be fixed immediately, said Golam Murtoza, an executive engineer of PDB’s marketing and distribution unit in Rangpur.
Bidyut Sramik League General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain, who lives adjacent to the workshop, said he was woken up by shocking sounds of transformers exploding and found the workshop on fire after coming out of his house.
A probe body has been formed following the incident.
Shankar Kumar Deb, an executive engineer of Sales and Distribution Unit-2, leads the committee which is due to submit a report within next three days.
PDB (Rangpur zone) Chief Engineer SM Touhidul Karim said the damage would be assessed on receiving the probe report.
