Rakibul Islam Litu, chief of cardiology at Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital, and Shah Md Jahurul Islam, managing director at Uttara's Lubana General Hospital have been ordered to be present in court by Apr 30.

Md Kamruzzaman, a 38-year-old resident of Dakshin Khan's Kaola, filed the case at Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He said Lubana Hospital, after 'manipulating' his angiogram report, insisted that he immediately have an angioplasty.

He was taken to Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital for chest pain on Feb 26.

The duty physician performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) and admitted him under the care of Dr Rakibul.

Hematology test, biochemical and doppler echocardiography along with another ECG were also performed the next day.

Dr Rakibul allegedly called the patient's family members to his chamber after the test results arrived at 4pm.

He told them the patient was suffering from heart disease and needed an angiogram.

The doctor recommended that they go to Lubana General Hospital for 'good treatment for affordable costs'. At Lubana, Dr Rakibul himself carried out the test on the patient.

Next day the patient's family was told that he had 90 percent blockage in his heart. He was at the risk of dying if a stent is not immediately inserted in his artery, the doctor told the family members.

The accused, Dr Rakibul and Jahurul Islam, said the entire procedure would cost Tk 300,000. They are also accused of misbehaving with the patient's family members for not agreeing to the procedure.

They moved him to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

His angiogram report showed that he had minimum blockage and did not need a stent operation, said Prof M Aktar Ali.

"The accused severely harassed the plaintiff and his family. They were verbally abused and threatened," said his lawyer Manjurul Ahsan.

In a comment to bdnews24.com, Dr Rakibul said he is ready to prove his diagnosis before court.
