Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan calls for end to transport strike

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has urged transport workers to end the nationwide strike after what he said 'receiving the government's assurance.'

Khan, also the executive president of apex union Bangladesh Transport Workers' Federation, made the appeal after a meeting with representatives of several unions of transport owners and workers.

"I am urging the owners and workers to end the strike. I hope the situation will now be normal."

Earlier on Wednesday, Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader held a brief meeting at his office with Law Minister Anisul Huq, Minister Khan, State Minister Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association (BRTOA) Secretary General Enayet Ullah.

The strike is causing much suffering,” said Quader after the half-hour meeting. “This is why we have called the meeting. We will continue discussions. [The Road Transport Owners Association] has assured us that they will speak to the workers unions and come to a solution by today.”

“We will discuss with the union leaders at my office (in Motijheel) this afternoon and will try and reach a solution,” Khandker Enayet Ullah told bdnews24.com.

After the meeting Quader's office, Khan, Ranga, also the president of BRTOA and Enayet Ullah met with representatives of several unions of owners and workers at the BRTOA office in Motijheel.

Khan's call to end the strike came during a media briefing after the meeting.
