Police had requested another seven days remand to question the two after the recovery of illegal weapons and to ensure a fair investigation into the case, said case investigation officer and Shahjadpur Police Inspector Monirul Islam.

“After the hearing, the court of Shirajganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Nazrul Islam granted two days,” he said.

Previously, on Feb 13, police had been given five days to grill Miru and five others.

On Feb 3, Mayor Miru’s brothers Mintu and Pintu allegedly assaulted and seriously injured Shahjadpur Government College Chhatra League President Bijoy Mahmud.

Chhatra League activists surrounded Miru’s house in protest. Media reports said the mayor and his supporters used two shotguns during the encounter.

Bangla national 'The Daily Samakal' Shahjadpur Correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul was shot and killed while covering the clash.

Shimul’s wife, Nurunnahar Begum, filed a murder case against Miru and 17 others suspects. Bijoy’s uncle Ershad Ali also filed a case over the assault of his nephew.

Police have detained twelve suspects over the two cases. They are currently in custody at the district jail.
