The woman has been identified by police as Farhana Haider Mollick, 35, who says she is from Bogra's Dupchanchia and lives with her husband in Dhaka.

Adamdighi Police Station OC Shawakat Kabir said Special Security Force (SSF) personnel caught the woman and handed her over to them on Sunday.

The prime minister addressed the rally at Santahar Stadium in the afternoon after inaugurating the country's first solar-powered  silo.

"Farhana breached the security barrier and reached in front of the prime minister. The security personnel stopped her at that time," OC Shawakat said.

He said police were questioning her to know why she tried to reach the prime minister.

A central leader of Awami League, who witnessed the incident, told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity that the woman came in front of Hasina when the prime minister came down from the stage after addressing the rally.

He said the woman grabbed Hasina by her feet and started to weep. The prime minister soothed her and left the place.

"But no one, not even the local leaders, could recognise her. Then she was handed over to the police," he added.
