Bangladeshi man killed in New York by landlord over rent dispute: Police

A Bangladeshi man has been fatally stabbed by his landlord in New York, say police.

Zakir Khan, who was a well-known figure among the Bangladesh community, was attacked on Wednesday in front of his home at the Bronx.

Police said they responded to call for a person stabbed in front of a home at Logan Avenue's Throgs Neck around 6:30pm local time.

The 44-year-old, who was found with multiple stab wounds, was rushed to the Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Doctors said that at least seven wounds were found on his chest.

Local media reported that police have detained the 51-year-old landlord and said that dispute over rent is suspected to be the motive behind the murder.

Khan, who hailed from the northeastern Bangladesh district of Sylhet, was a real estate broker. He is survived by wife, a daughter and two sons.

Those close to him told bdnews24.com that he had been a tenant of the Egyptian landlord for a long time.

The landlord, however, alleges that Khan was not paying the rent for several months as he wanted to buy the apartment, they said.

Bangladeshis thronged the hospital as soon as the news of Khan's murder broke.

Khan, a popular face among the community, actively participated in community events.

He was one of the key organisers of the event in Bronx two days ago to observe the International Mother Language Day.
