Sixty-year-old Alauddin was undergoing treatment for a heart condition, said Hospital Police Outpost Sub-Inspector Shah Alam.

He was a resident of Konagati village in Shirajganj’s Sadar Upazila, said SI Alam.

Alauddin was admitted to the hospital on 3am on Saturday.

“I was trying to turn off the fan in his room around 11:30 am on Sunday,” said Alauddin’s son Rauf Sarkar. “I could not find it and asked an intern doctor ‘Apa, where is the fan switch?’”

“She became angry and said ‘Am I hospital support staff? Do I stay in this room?’. Another doctor, Asif, asked me why I was misbehaving, grabbed me by the collar and began to hit me. He took me to another room and continued the beating. Then he ordered me to hold my ears and do 100 squats.”

“They then locked me in the director’s office,” Rauf claims. “The director left when they were beating me again around 3pm.”

Hospital Director Brigadier General AKM Masud Ahsan claims no assault took place in his office.

The intern doctors also assaulted his two sisters, says Rauf.

“We rescued Rauf after learning of the beating,” said SI Shah Alam. “Police were also assaulted at that time.”

“We closed the emergency division from 12pm to 3pm to protest the treatment and demand the safety of doctors,” said intern doctor spokesperson Kutubuddin. “The emergency room was reopened at the request of the director and senior doctors.”

The indefinite strike was also dismissed.

Asked about Rauf’s claims of assault, Kutubuddin said “We took steps when he became unpleasant.”
