University Proctor Munshi Naser Ibne Afzal said the clash continued for around two hours from 6 pm on Sunday. No casualties have been reported.

Afzal told bdnews24.com that local youths 'Limon' and 'Mushtaq' harassed the female student of the anthropology department at the main gate of the university leading to the clash.

"Hearing about the matter from her, other students went to speak to the youths. Mostaq slapped a student at one stage of an altercation," he said.

The Proctor said the locals pelted brickbats and threw six crude bombs on students who took the position on the Sylhet-Sunamganj Road.

The students vandalised several shops at that time, he said.

Police brought the situation under control by firing several shots in the air, he added.

Jalalabad Police Station OC Aktar Hossain said police fired 52 rounds of rubber bullets and brought the situation under control.
