Jagannath University suspends teacher for 'sexually harassing' student

Jagannath University has suspended a teacher on the charge of sexually harassing a female student.

An education ministry statement on Monday said the university authorities decided to suspend theatre department chairman Md Abul Halim Pramanik alias Samrat after finding the allegation to be true in the initial investigation.

It said the university formed an investigation committee at Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid's directive. "The final steps will be taken after the investigation is complete," it added.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Mizanur Rahman told bdnews24.com the authorities are investigating the allegation against associate professor Samrat.

The victim, in the written complaint filed with the VC, said Samrat called her to his room by phone on Feb 15 and grabbed her inappropriately.

She said she pushed the teacher away and fled when he tried to sexually harass her.
