The incident occurred around 3am on Sunday at the city's Matihar, said the local RAB unit's chief Major Ashraful Islam.

The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Kawser Hossain of Chapainawabganj.

"A RAB team was attacked while patrolling the Budhparha neighbourhood near the university. The criminals opened fire forcing our men to retaliate," he told bdnews24.com.

According to the senior RAB officer, Kawser was 'found shot' at the spot. He was taken to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Major Islam said Kawser was wanted in four cases for murder and robbery.

RAB said they have seized a pistol, ammunition and two sharp weapons from the spot.
