Passenger caught with 15 gold bars hidden under Dhaka airport trolley

Customs at Dhaka airport have detained a passenger attempting to smuggle two kilos of gold bars into the country.

Comilla resident Mohammad Mannan had travelled to Dhaka from Dubai via Oman on  a Bangladesh Biman flight which arrived around 11am on Thursday, said Customs Intelligence Division Director General Moinul Khan.

Mannan had passed through immigration and picked up his luggage. He was stopped by customs officials for a search.

During the search, found five aluminum foil packages containing the gold bars were found secured to the underside of the trolley with magnets.

A total of 15 bars were found in the packages, said Moinul Khan.

The total weight of the gold was approximately 1.75 kilograms, which would sell at a current market price of Tk 7 million.

Mannan worked as a driver in Dubai, said Moinul. Legal proceedings will be started against him under the Customs Act and the Special Powers Act.
