Police said Gouripur Upazila Chairman and local BNP leader Tayebur Rahman Hiron was detained late on Tuesday in front of the Upazila Council offices.

Hiron is the joint convener of BNP's Mymensingh North District unit.

Gouripur police OC Delwar Ahmmed said Hiron is accused in a case of violence in the neighbouring Purbadhala Upazila of Netrikona District in early 2015, when the BNP was enforcing a countrywide blockade of roads, rail and waterways.

The police officer, who could not provide any further details of the case, said Hiron has been sent to the Mymensingh Detective Branch office the same night.

Hiron's family, however, claimed that he has been arrested over an altercation with the local MP.

"He had an argument with the Mymensingh-3 MP Nazim Uddin Ahmed and was arrested the same day over that incident," said his brother Kamrul Islam Kiron.

He, however, could not say what was behind the argument.

The lawmaker denied the allegations.

"I have not met Hiron in the last three months. I am not connected with his arrest in any way," Nazim told bdnews24.com.
