The order on Wednesday came over the case started over 'assault' of Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Bijoy Mahmud in Sirajganj.

Mayor Miru's brother Hafizul Hoque Pintu picked up Bijoy, Chhatra League president of Shahzadpur Government College, on Feb 2 and broke his arms and legs, according to the case started by Bijoy's uncle Ershad Ali.

Miru, his two brothers, Pintu and Mintu, are accused in the case among others.

Shahzadpur police Inspector Monirul Islam, who is in charge of investigating the case, said: "Police sought seven-day remand for Mintu and driver Shahin. The court granted five days."

Mayor Miru is also the organising secretary of Sirajganj Awami League.

The court previously rejected police's plea to take Pintu on remand.

In protest against the alleged assault on Bijoy, a group of local Awami League activists encircled Miru's house on Feb 2.

During the clashes that followed, Bangla daily Dainik Samakal's Shahzadpur Correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul was shot in the head and later died.

Shimul's wife Nurunnahar Begum filed a case accusing Miru and 17 others and 20-25 unidentified people.

Six including Mayor Miru have been arrested in the case.
