Police said 'Sagar', who died in the alleged encounter, had robbed a businessman of Tk 2.5 million at Islampur a few months ago after firing at him.

'Sagar' was cornered by police near Chitra cinema hall at Tantibazar around 3am early on Tuesday, additional joint commissioner Mohd Shahenshah said.

"When he was asked to give up, Sagar lobbed bombs at police, who fired back. He was found injured and taken to hospital."

'Sagar' was taken to Mitford hospital where doctors declared him dead, said Inspector Moudud Hawladar of Kotwali police station.

He said 'Sagar' was involved in many cases of robbery, specially in snatching away cash and gold. But his detailed identity was not yet known, said Hawladar.
