Bangladesh youth dies in Panama Canal while illegally travelling to the US

A Bangladeshi youth has drowned while illegally travelling to the United States from Brazil.

A boat carrying the deceased, 22-year-old Arman Sheikh who hails from Noakhali, and his brother-in-law Shahed Kamal Sujan capsized in the Panama Canal Monday night.

US police recovered Arman's body and kept it at the Immigration Detention Centre.

Sujan, who is accused in multiple money embezzlement cases, is under their custody.

Four months back, Arman went to Brazil with Sujan from his village at the Rampur Union of Companyganj, Rampur Union Parishad Chairman Iqbal Bahar said quoting their relatives,

"According to complaints filed at the local police station, Sujan illegally obtained money from locals as the head of Al Ittihad Multipurpose Cooperative Society in Companyganj."

Arman's father 'Enamul' have lived in the US for long. Now he stays in his village in Noakhali.

Companyganj police OC Syed Fazle Rabbi said Sujan had been sued over money embezzlement and forgery.

Police were investigating the incident, added the OC.
