Suranjit Sengupta cremated in Sunamganj home

Before a grieving throng of admirers and family members, veteran Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta's mortal remains have been consigned to flames at the courtyard of his residence in Anwarapur village in Sunamganj's Dirai.

His funeral took place on Monday.

The maverick politician died early on Sunday at a hospital in Dhaka when his ailing health took a serious turn.

His personal aide Sujit Roy told bdnews24.com that the leader's pyre was set with the sandalwood plant he had planted himself a few years ago.

The late leader was accorded a guard of honour by police after his body was flown in to his village from Sylhet in a helicopter on Monday noon.

Siranjit's son Soumen Sengupta made a brief speech saying that the family was touched by the overwhelming love the people had given his father. He said the family want to continue living in the love of the people.

Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Islam, District Awami League President Motiur Rahman, General Secretary M Enamul Kabir Emon and others paid floral tributes to the deceased leader.

After being flown in to Sylhet, his party colleagues paid tributes to him at the Shaheed Minar earlier on Monday.

Several leaders were present there at the time.

President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other MPs paid their last respects to the lawmaker at the South Plaza of the Parliament building on Sunday.
