Sifatul Islam has confessed to killing his 27-year-old brother, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner Wahidul Islam of Mohammadpur division.

The family, he said, were aware of the murder.

Shihab, a third-year business student at the Independent University of Bangladesh, was found in his room with his throat slit on Saturday noon.

Police, informed by the family, recovered the body which had started to smell.

Shihab, the oldest of three siblings, was at home when his parents and others from the family went to their village home at Madaripur, Abu Bakkar, son of the victim’s maternal cousin, told bdnews24.com.

They smelled the bad odour coming from Shihab’s locked room when they returned on Friday and called police the next day, he said.

“Shihab was killed by his younger brother early on Tuesday. Their parents knew about the murder. They went to Madaraipur on Wednesday afternoon. They returned on Friday,” said Wahidul.

Sifat is a second-year student of Birsreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf College.

During questioning, he claimed his brother was a drug addict, said Wahidul.

“He would have yaba and drink on a regular basis. He would misbehave with his elderly parents. He would have girls over in the house. The family became his hostage.”

Sifat claimed he could not tolerate him hitting their mother.

“So he took it upon himself to murder his brother by slitting his throat. That is what he said while confessing in court,” Wahidul added.

He is the only suspect in the murder case started by their father Sirajul Islam.

“Their parents are old. The younger sister is physically disabled. So Sifat is the only suspect in the case.”
