The accident occurred at the Aziz Tannery (Bay-Tannery) in Hemayatpur’s Harindhara area on Wednesday afternoon, said Tannery Police Outpost Director Md Wahiduzzaman.

The injured have been taken to various local hospitals for treatment.

Their names have not been made public so far.

The fire service is conducting search and rescue operations to see if anyone else has been trapped in the roof collapse.

“We cannot say whether anyone else is currently trapped under the collapsed roof,” said Savar Fire Service Senior Station Officer Mohammad Alauddin. “We will know more once the operation is complete.”

The rubble is being cleared, the fire service official said.

An initial investigation suggests the roof collapsed due to structural weaknesses, he added.

A group of construction workers were doing foundry work on the 20-foot high roof when it collapsed and trapped several of them, Alauddin said.
