The verdict was announced by Netrokona Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Saifur Rahman on Wednesday.

Those convicted are 45-year old Habibur Rahman alias Khosru, his 40-year old brother Quamruzzaman alias Quamru Miah and 42-year old Golam Farooq alias Tanvir.

Kayes Chowdhury was hacked to death in front of his home in Hatnaya Village in Mohonganj Upazila on Feb 6, 2004, said Additional Public Prosecutor Saifur Rahman.

The murder was over a land dispute between the victim and the convicts.

“Two days after the murder, Kayes’ brother Manik Chowdhury accused 29 in a case.

“Police filed a chargesheet against all the suspects on Aug 31. Justice Md Saiful Alam acquitted 26 and sentenced three to life,” said the public prosecutor.

The convicted were Kayes’s neighbours, said Prosecutor Saiful. Quamru and Tanvir were both present to hear the verdict. Khasru is currently at large.

The plaintiffs are not satisfied with the verdict, said PP Saiful and indicated the prosecution may pursue an appeal in a higher court.

They had expected death sentences, the public prosecutor said.
