This year's meet centres around the slogan of "Responsive and Responsible Leadership."

The meet formally began on the morning of Tuesday local time.

Hasina is the first elected leader of Bangladesh to have been invited to the event.

WEF founder and Executive Director Karl Schwab invited her to attend the annual event, also dubbed as an 'annual discussion of the rich'.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali believes the invitation has enhanced the image of Bangladesh on the global arena.

After the inaugural speech by Schwab, a cultural programme followed where a galaxy of stars including Shakira performed before the nearly 3000-strong spectators comprising heads of state and business leaders, leading economists and other stakeholders.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also spoke on Tuesday.

The formal round of discussions will begin Wednesday.

State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak is accompanying the prime minister on the tour.
