Zhuma’s mother, Karima Begum, filed the case on Monday night, said Zakiganj Police Station OC Habibur Rahman.

Bahar Uddin, a young man of the same village, was named the prime suspect in the case. Three or four others have also been accused as accomplices in the attack.

According to police, the 17-year old first-year student of Isamoti Degree College was on her way to college when Bahar Uddin, 22, attacked her.

“Bahar had been harassing Zhuma for three years,” claimed Zhuma’s mother. “He attacked her after she refused his marriage proposal.”

Police are looking to arrest Bahar, said OC Habibur.

Bahar’s older brother, 35-year-old Nasir Uddin had been detained for questioning, added OC Habibur.

Zhuma is undergoing treatment at Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Her condition was improving, said Doctor Masud Hossain.

She has been given a blood transfusion and is currently out of danger.
