This is the second such incident in a few months that took place at Rasulpur village of Zakiganj Upazila of the district on Sunday.

Zhuma Akter, 17, a first-year student of Isamoti Degree College, was on her way to college when Bahar Uddin, 22, of the same village attacked her, according to Additional SP Sugyan Chakma.

Bahar, a madrasa drop-out, now works as an electrician in the area.

Since Bahar had been harassing Zhuma for quite sometime, her mother was escorting her to college.

Last year, the hacking of college student Khadiza Begum Nargis by a Bangladesh Chattra League leader of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology roused protests across Bangladesh.

Khadiza, who was in coma for several days, recovered from severe injuries after a prolonged treatment at a specialised hospital in Dhaka.

That was also an issue of unrequited love affairs. The case is under trial now.

Zhuma’s mother Karima Begum said in the morning she had dropped her son to school, and then was escorting her daughter to college.

“Bahar waylaid and attack my daughter with sharp weapons and fled the scene,” she said adding Zhuma is now under treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

She underwent an operation in one of her hands, she added.

The additional SP said the girl received injures in left arm and belly but doctors said she was out of danger.

Police are looking for Bahar, he added.

According to local UP member Abdul Kadir, Bahar, son of Abdul Gafur, had been harassing Zhuma for around three years. They had meetings about the matter and Bahar had been warned, he added.
