SP ASM Mahtab Uddin Jaman said that the four were detained in a raid after police received complaints that two cheques were forced from siblings Abdus Sattar and his sister Kohinoor at gunpoint.

Sattar is a Gopinathpur grocer, while Kohinoor's husband is an expatriate, police said.

The upazila's South Hamchadi Juba Dal Organizational Secretary Najrul Islam Jashim 30 and his three other accomplices--Farhad Uddin Sifat, 18, Noman, 22, and Mahbubur Rahman Hridoy, 18, were detained following the operation, he said.

Of them, Jashim, a native of the village, is a 'known criminal' in police records and is accused in six cases relating to stolen arms, robbery, extortion and other charges lodged with the Lakhipur Police Station, the SP said.

The police are not yet clear on whether Jashim and Sattar had any previous dealing or if it is simply a case of extortion.

The SP said, "Jashim, along with his henchmen, threatened and forced the cheques to be written . He has been associated with a number of criminal activities in the area."

The police were lying in wait at Lakshmipur town NCC Bank after receiving the complaint and managed to nab Sifat.

Based on information from his interrogation, the others were also nabbed following raids at various places in the area.

A total of four cheques to NCC and Islami banks have been recovered, in addition to a cache of weapons including a single barrelled gun, two LGs, a machete and six rounds of ammunition.
