The BNP was the first political party to sit with the president for talks on forming a new Election Commission. Their meeting was held on Dec 18.

The present EC led by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad was formed in 2012 through a search committee that then President Zillur Rahman formed upon consulting political parties.

The same procedure will be followed this time to form the Election Commission that will hold the 2019 election, Law Minister Anisul Huq had said.

He said President Hamid would appoint officials to the new Election Commission via a search committee. The president's office is yet to make an official statement on the matter.

The tenure of current Election Commission expires in February.

President Hamid sat for talks with 23 parties in four phases so far. The dialogue will come to an end after talks are held with the Awami League.
