'Motahar', 40 and his wife 'Sheuly', 35, had lived with their 6-year-old son in a rented apartment at Darus Salam.

“Both of the victims had scarves around their necks,” Darus Salam police OC Selimuzzaman told bdnews24.com. “After an initial investigation, we believe it to be a case of suicide.”

Police recovered the bodies late on Saturday from the ground floor apartment of a six-storey building at the South Bishil neighbourhood.

Motahar was found hanged from the ceiling fan, and Sheuly's body was on the bed, said the police officer.

“We spoke to the boy,” the OC said. “From what he told us, his mother committed suicide. When his father came home and saw his wife’s body, he hanged himself as well.”

The neighbours informed police after hearing their son crying, he added.

The bodies have been taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Asked about the motive for the suicides, the OC said: “They owed people money, but the amount wasn’t significant. It is possible the suicide was the result of family problems.”

Motahar, a vegetable vendor, and his wife hailed from Netrakona.
