“I strongly believe that it is possible for them to bring glory and honour for us, by nurturing virtues like patriotism and perseverance,” she said while addressing a National Standard handing over ceremony.

The premier handed National Standard to Bangabandhu base at the Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday.

“BAF members must be careful in handling military equipments both at home and abroad as these equipments had been purchased through the hard-earned money of people,” she said on the occasion.

The base, largest in BAF, was named “Bangabandhu” on Apr 9, 2013.

Hasina also praised BAF for its exemplary performance at the UN peacekeeping mission.

Upon taking a tour of the Bangabandhu base, she said: “Allies used this air force base to operate aircrafts during the Second World War.”

“The base has also been praised time and again for helping out the civil administration in disaster management,” she added.

She highlighted BAF’s ‘glorious’ role during the 1971 liberation war and said it would be cherished forever.

“The chief responsibility of the air force is to keep the sky border safe and free of foes,” said the Awami League chief.

“Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of a modern, strong and organised air force suitable to the geographic location, military strategy, and economic development of the country,” Hasina asserted.
