Maolana Gias Uddin Ahmed, head of the Ijtema management committee, said: "‘Jor' means congregation or reunion. The participants will go out preaching for Islam at the end of the five-day programme."

They will take part in the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest Muslim congregation after the Hajj, starting from Jan 13, 2017, he said.

After Fajr prayers on Friday, the Ijtema started with a sermon 'Kalgujari’ delivered by Indian Islamic scholar Iqbal Hafiz. Maolana Abdul Matin translated his speech into Bangla.

The programme will end with prayers on Tuesday afternoon.
