Sylhet college girl Khadiza appears before media, says she is well

Sylhet college girl Khadiza Begum Nargis says she has almost recovered from the machete attack by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader that left her critically wounded.

She spoke to the media for the first time on Saturday at the Square Hospital in Dhaka.

She was brought to the conference room by her doctors and spoke from a wheelchair.

She expressed her gratitude to the hospital administration, the media and the people for their support.

“It is because of your prayers that I am now well,” she said. “Please pray for my complete recovery. I would also like to thank the hospital authorities and everyone in the media for doing their part.”

Doctors said that the formalities of her release would be completed on Saturday, but she would be released on Sunday.

Khadiza is to be admitted to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Dhaka’s Savar on Monday for the treatment of the paralysis in her left arm and leg.

Khadiza was attacked on Oct 3 at the Sylhet MC College campus by Badrul Alam, a leader of BCL's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit.

She had received severe injuries to her brain, head, hands and legs in the attack.

Khadiza was brought to Dhaka's Square Hospital the following day in critical condition, amidst a wave of protests.

She underwent three surgeries and was put on life support until Oct 13.

A week later, her condition improved and the nurses were able to take her out in a wheelchair.

Her family told doctors then she was unable to recognise her loved ones at that time.

On Thursday, her brother Sharnan Haque Shaheen shared a picture of her sitting up in bed on his Facebook page and said her condition had improved.
