He was elected as new chief of the organization after Saudi Arabia proposed his name following the resignation of immediate past Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani on health ground, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali also invited him to visit Bangladesh after Al-Othaimeen’s nomination was endorsed at a meeting in Makkha on Thursday, the foreign ministry said.
The meeting was called at the request of Saudi Arabia after the recent ballistic missile attacks by Yemen's Houthi-Saleh militias targeting the Holy city of Makkah.
Mahmood Ali also praised Madani’s leadership while greeting the new chief.
The foreign minister had a meeting with Dr Nizar Madani, the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, on the sidelines and discussed bilateral cooperation between the “brotherly” countries, the statement said.
