On Tuesday, a special judge's court fixed Jan 4 for recording witnesses in the case, said prosecutor Rathish Chandra Bhowmik.

Police had pressed charges against eight persons over the killing of 66-year-old Kunio Hoshi.

Five of them -- JMB's Rangpur zone chief Masud Rana, Ishaq Ali, Liton Mia, Abu Sayed and Shakhawat Hossain -- were produced before the court on Tuesday. They pleaded not guilty.

Those accused of the murder are Rangpur Area Commander of JMB Masud Rana 33, member Isfaq Ali, 34, Liton Mia, 32, Abu Sayed, 28, Saddam Hussain, 32, Ahsan Ullah Ansari, 31, Najrul Islam, 32, and Shakhawat Hussain, 30.

Two others, Ahsan Ullah Ansari and Saddam Hossain are absconding while the eighth, Nazrul Islam died on Aug 2 in what police in Rajshahi described as a 'shootout'.

Police say Masud Rana fired three bullets at farmer Hoshi from a motorcycle at a village in Rangpur's Kaunia Upazila on Oct 3 last year.

The 66-year old Japanese citizen died on the spot.

Though international terror outfit Islamic State was quick to claim responsibility, the government refuted it and blamed the JMB for the attack.
