The incident occurred early on Monday at West Ramnagar along the Dhaka-Khulna highway, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudarshan Roy.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old ‘Shawkat’, son of Moyen Mandal from Kumarparha village at Faridpur.

The ‘bandit’ and his gang cut down a tree to block the highway near the West Ramnagar parking area for buses, said police official Roy.

“A police team was sent to confront the bandits,” he said.

“When the bandits saw the team they opened fire and police were forced to respond. The bandits eventually retreated and ‘Shawkat’’s body was then recovered from the spot.”

A pistol, a bullet, a magazine of ammunition and four sharp weapons were recovered from the scene, he said.

‘Shawkat’ was the leader of a local bandit group and several cases had been filed against him at the police station, added Roy.
