The militant Kulu Mia, 30, was a resident of Khawajanagar in Kushtia Sadar upazila.

OC Islam said that a raid was initiated when detectives learnt that some JMB militants had gathered to plan some violence.

"During the raid, the militants fired and police retaliated. Later a bullet-hit man was found on the spot and he was declared dead when taken to the hospital," he said.

Police later identified the dead man as JMB's regional commander Kulu Mia, he said.

Police said a pistol, some live and used ammunition and three machetes were recovered from the spot.

Islam said Kulu Mia was a suspect in the murder of homeopath Mir Sanowar Rahman.

The homeopath was hacked to death by suspected JMB militants on May 20 at Kushtia's Battail Union.
