Prime suspect in assault of two Dhaka college girls arrested

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) says it has arrested the 'prime suspect’ in the assault of two Dhaka college girls, who protested against eve-teasing.

Jiban Karim alias Babu was detained on Sunday from Mirpur, Assistant Superintendent Md Sajedul Islam of Mirpur-based RAB-4 said on Monday.

On Oct 19, two BCIC college students were physically assaulted by men, who were upset when the girls protested eve-teasing.

The incident triggered protests by the students of the college who took to the streets.

BCIC College teacher Imad ul Haq told bdnews24.com then the victims were twin sisters and first-year Humanities student.

“They were waiting for the bus around 11am after classes,” he said. “It was then that two young men, Jiban and ‘Lutfar’ began to harass them. When they objected, the boys attacked them.”

Within hours of the incident police had arrested Lutfar Rahman Babu from the area .

The father of the students filed a case with the local police station accusing Jiban and several other unidentified individuals.

Lutfar Rahman Babu was one of the perpetrators of the attack and was Jiban’s friend , local police's Sub Inspector Anuj Kumar Sarkar had said at the time.

“Jiban runs a food stall near the college. Lutfar confessed that he, Jiban and a few others harassed the students,” said the police officer.
