She was unveiling the plaque of 31-storey Bangabandhu Media Complex at the National Press Club on its 62nd founding anniversary on Thursday.

She spoke about her government’s steps for the welfare of journalists and said the Eighth Wage Board for newspapers was already implemented.

Speaking about the journalists’ demand of a new wage board, Hasina said, “In our country, the owner becomes the editor. That sometimes limits the scope of journalism.”

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu told Parliament in April that
Reacting to allegations about lack of media freedom in Bangladesh, she wondered how the allegations were being published if the media were not enjoying freedom.
According to her, 24 private TV stations are operating in Bangladesh along with 750 dailies. Forty-four more stations have sought licence, she added.
“Many speak at talk shows in these TV channels. Can anyone say that journalists don’t have freedom after hearing them?” Hasina asked.
Stressing the need for a guideline for the media, she said her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had also pitched for it.
The prime minister urged the journalists to work hard and be mindful of their responsibilities for the society and country.
She also spoke about how the media have changed after online journalism arrived.
