The operation, led by the hospital’s orthopaedic department Consultant Dr Mejbah Uddin Ahmed, commenced around 3pm and ended around 5pm on Monday.

Later, Ahmed told reporters that the surgery had been successful.

“Her hands and fingers have suffered several serious cuts. But we are not sure when we will be able to perform another surgery on her left hand as it is still in a paralysed state.”

Khadiza’s uncle Abdul Baset told bdnews24.com: “The operation on her right hand has been successful. The doctors have said they will decide two or three weeks later on performing the surgery on her left hand as it’s paralysed.”

Assaulted violently on Oct 3 on the Sylhet MC College campus by Badrul Alam, a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit, Khadiza was taken to Dhaka’s Square Hospitals the following day amidst a wave of protests.

The Sylhet Government Women’s College student had received severe injuries in her brain, head, hands and legs in the machete attack.

After she was brought to Dhaka, she was put on life support until last Thursday.

On Saturday, the hospital’s Medicine and Critical Care Unit Consultant Mirza Nazim Uddin had said Monday’s surgery was mandatory as the muscle chain in Khadiza’s hand was cut when she tried to ward off the blows of the sharp weapon.
